Rob Fairclough: Swinton are Championship’s dark horses in 2019
Swinton’s new recruit Rob Fairclough thinks the team can cause a few upsets in the Championship next season.
The 21-year-old half-back has joined the Lions on a permanent deal from St Helens after two impressive loan spells.
Swinton just avoided relegation last season by beating League 1 outfit Workington Town in the Promotion Play-Off, but Fairclough believes the Lions can surprise a few people in 2019.
He told loverugbyleague.com: “I think we are the dark horses this year.
“There is a good feeling around the group at the minute and everyone is getting on really well.
“The new additions have settled in really well and the lads that have come back from international duty have slotted in already, so the comradery is good and everyone will be fighting for each other.
“Obviously, results didn’t go our way last season and changes have got to be made. Sport is based on winning, so changes have been made and there is good competition for places, so everyone is fighting to get in the squad.”

Fairclough has struggled with injuries in recent years, and his main ambition for next season is playing regularly for Stuart Littler’s side.
He added: “I’m hoping to stay injury free next season, that’s a big aim for me.
“I want to get a good run of games under my belt and hopefully put in good performances for Stu and the boys.
“I got injured in my first game in my second spell with the club but hopefully I get chance to repay Stu’s faith now for giving me the number seven shirt. Hopefully I can put in some good performances for Swinton and we’ll see where that takes us.”
