Young Wigan forward joins Workington on loan

Wigan forward Caine Barnes has joined Workington on a season-long loan deal.

The 19-year-old will head back to Town on a one-year loan agreement, returning to Derwent Park after he spent time there on loan last season.

A former Seaton Rangers junior, Barnes hails from Cumbria and will look to help Leon Pryce’s side achieve promotion to the Championship next season.

On signing Barnes, Town chairman Les Smallwood said: “Caine is a great lad with an unbelievable future in the game.

“After spending part of last season with us, we are absolutely delighted to get a great local player and to also help further his experience in a league that is very strong and competitive.

“He is a big, strong runner who runs excellent lines and his defence will complement what is already an experienced and skillful pack.

“Other clubs were interested in him but he’s a Town fan so we had a slight advantage in that respect. Wigan also know that we’ll look after him here at Derwent Park.”

Wigan’s executive director Kris Radlinski commented: “Caine will benefit from playing regular rugby and with the unfortunate situation at reserve level we believe that it’s in their best interest to have him playing meaningful rugby league.

“We enjoy a great working relationship with Workington Town and in Leon Pryce, Caine has a sharp rugby mind to tap into.

“We’ll be following his progress closely and we wish him the best of luck.”
