Brett Phillips returns to rugby league with Whitehaven

Former Scotland international Brett Phillips has returned to rugby league with Whitehaven on a one-year deal.

Phillips, 30, sat out the whole of last season having previously scored 37 tries in 145 appearances for Workington, as well as winning five caps for Scotland.

He said: “It’s good to be back out there amongst all of the lads I’ve played in the same team as Jason Mossop, Marc Shackley, Kris Coward and obviously Callum (Phillips).

“It’s been great to get back amongst the contact, I have kept myself ticking over while out of the game but there’s something different about that. It’s been great with a good set of lads.”

Brother Callum is part of a revamped squad under new coach Garry Charlton, who gave Phillips his professional debut in 2012 having signed him from amateur club Seaton Rangers.
Charlton said: “It’s a huge bonus for the club, he’s an enforcer down that left hand side. He’s great in defence and attack.

“He’s been flying as well, we’re all happy with the way he has been progressing. There’s no backward steps with Brett you know what you going to get out of him week in week out.”
