Robert Elstone: Tony Adams is a great addition to rugby league
Super League chief executive Robert Elstone believes the appointment of Tony Adams as the RFL’s new president is a big positive for the sport.
Former England and Arsenal captain Tony Adams will become the 29thpresident of the Rugby Football League next summer.
Adams will succeed Andy Burnham as president, with Doncaster chief executive Carl Hall becoming vice-president.
“Tony is going to be a great addition to rugby league,” Elstone told Sky Sports News.
“He is an RFL appointment and will take over as president midway through 2019.
“It really conveys the way rugby league is respected across the whole sporting sector and for someone like Tony to come into the game is a really positive thing.”
Magic Weekend will move to Anfield in 2019 – the home of Liverpool FC – while Super League champions Wigan Warriors will face Challenge Cup winners Catalans Dragons at the Nou Camp in May.
The Challenge Cup final will be once again held at Wembley, with the Grand Final taking place at Old Trafford.
“In terms of working with football clubs, Wigan will have played at Old Trafford, Anfield and the Nou Camp in the space of nine months,” Elstone added.
“For Super League to be played such iconic stadiums makes a statement about where the sport is going and a statement of intent about our ambitions, so we are keen to embrace that.”
