Adrian Lam gives update on his future as Wigan coach

Adrian Lam admitted the sooner Wigan sort out their future coaching position, the better for the team it will be. 

The head coaching role at the Warriors next season is currently vacant after Shaun Edwards decided to stay in rugby union.

Lam, who was initially appointed as interim head coach for 2019, is Betfred’s favourite to be Wigan’s next permanent boss.

Speaking after Wigan’s 6-4 win over Castleford on Saturday, Lam commented: “I haven’t even spoken to the club to be honest but I’ve spoken to my manager and we will make contact with the club as soon as we can.

“I feel it hasn’t been the right timing to speak to them with where we are sitting on the ladder because the priority has been on the team rather than me.

“It probably needs to get sorted in the next couple of weeks because it might help the team moving forward.

“I need to get my manager to speak with the club and from that we will see what the opportunity is and we will move forward with what we need to.”

The win over the Tigers saw the Warriors move up one position in the Super League table to eighth, and Lam was proud of his side’s effort in defence as they kept Castleford try-less.

Lam added: “The conditions levelled the game out but if you had told me we’d win 6-4 before the game then I would’ve taken it.

“We just need to win at the moment and do whatever it takes. We probably could have managed the game better at the end but I felt confident in our defence.

“It was the best it has been all the year and it was like what it was last year when they were successful, so we turned a corner today just on the back of our hunger.

“We had a big week in regards to our defence and I was pretty personal in a couple of meetings. Sometimes you need to do that to get their attention but they were really hungry today, you could see that.

“I was direct with individuals. When you spend more attention to details with individuals then you can get your point across but what is great about our group is that they’re honest with each other and that was much better today.”

Lam also revealed centre Dan Sarginson could return to face London Broncos on Thursday.
