Women’s round-up: Castleford stay unbeaten by beating St Helens

Round four of the Women’s Super League may down go as the most memorable yet with all four games providing great entertainment. 

Castleford Tigers 30-14 St. Helens

In the battle of the undefeated, Castleford Tigers Women ran out victorious against St. Helens in front of over 800 fans at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

Tara Stanley was on fire as the full-back’s 14-point haul helped the Tigresses to a memorable win.

St. Helens certainly didn’t make it an easy day at the office for the table toppers as two first half tries from Zoe Harris and Leah Burke saw the visitors take a 10-6 lead.

With ten minutes remaining until the half-time break, Castleford hit back with two tries of their own as Stanley and Woman of Steel Georgia Roche crossed the whitewash to make it 14-10.

The loss of Faye Gaskin and Vicky Whitfield to injuries was a massive blow for Derek Hardman’s side however, things got worse as tries from Rhiannion Marshall and Emma Lumley put the game out of reach for Saints.

A second effort for Burke showed there was still life in the visitors but that didn’t last long as Roche soon had her second following a spectacular individual effort.

The win puts Castleford two-points clear at the top of the Women’s Super League table. Saints drop to third with Bradford Bulls enjoying a better points difference.

York City Knights 4-40 Bradford Bulls

Bradford Bulls were made to work hard for their win over York City Knights – despite what the score line might suggest.

The Knights scored only their second try of the season through Bev Langan in the opening 40 minutes. Her effort meant that there was only ten points separating both teams at the break with Bradford leading 14-4.

In the end though, the Bulls ran out comfortable 40-14 winners as four tries from Stacey Greenwood, two from Debbie Smith and further efforts from Grace Ramsden and Amy Hardcastle, sealed an important win.

With Bradford boasting an impressive points difference, they have moved ahead of St. Helens into second place in the Women’s Super League table. Could they be the dark horse in this year’s competition?

Wigan Warriors 4-12 Leeds Rhinos 

Things have been going from bad to worse at Wigan. A woeful start to the season followed by a couple of early departures from the club have seen the defending champions linger in the bottom half of the table.

Leeds took full advantage of their opponents’ struggles as they ran out 12-4winners away at Robins Park.

Tries from Fran Goldthorpe and Courtney Hill earned Rhinos their third win of the season which takes the team to fourth in the table.

Wigan’s only try came courtesy of Georgia Wilson as Amanda Wilkinson’s side remain fifth in the table, level on points with Featherstone Rovers and Wakefield Trinity.

Wakefield Trinity 8-40 Featherstone Rovers 

In a hotly contested West Yorkshire derby, Featherstone Rovers claimed their first win of the season.

Jonny Payne’s side won 40-8 at the Mobile Rocket Stadium with tries from Grace Cotton, Helen Teasdale, Brogan Churm, Chloe Reynolds, Andrea Dobson and Paige Stevens securing the victory.

Amy Brinkley and Chloe Billington got the two consolation efforts for Wakefield.
