1895 Cup round-up: Widnes survive Featherstone fightback, Sheffield thrash youthful Halifax
The Championship trio of Widnes, Sheffield and Barrow all progressed to the quarter-finals of the 1895 Cup last night, leaving themselves two games away from a trip to Wembley.
The Vikings fought off a spirited fightback from Ryan Carr’s side to claim a tight 22-16 victory at the Select Security Stadium, with young Jayden Hatton crossing for a hat-trick.
Mark Aston’s Eagles booked their place in the last eight with a 52-8 victory over Halifax, who made 17 changes following their Challenge Cup quarter-final victory over Bradford three days prior. Sheffield ran in 10 tries, with Ben Blackmore and Jason Crookes both scoring twice.
John Kear also chose to make wholesale changes following Sunday’s Challenge cup tie at Odsal. Their youthful side were beaten 50-6 by Barrow at Craven Park, with Jamie Dallimore claiming a 22-point haul.
They will be joined in the hat for the quarter-finals by Batley, Dewsbury, Leigh, York and Doncaster, the only remaining Betfred League One side.
