Salford hooker Logan Tomkins will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has made 100 appearances for the Red Devils since making his loan move from hometown club Wigan permanent in 2016.

Salford announced the signing of Australian hooker Connor Jones from Featherstone at half-time in their 17-16 win over Hull KR on Friday night, who will replace Tomkins at the club next year.

Red Devils coach Ian Watson said: “We are losing Logan for next year and that is due purely to financial reasons.

“We can’t afford to keep Logan and it is a shame because Logan has been outstanding in the last eight weeks and he has been the ultimate professional in the time he has been here.

“We would have liked to have kept Logan as part of our squad but we just can’t afford to keep him so we have had to look at something else.”

Jones, 24, has impressed in the Championship this season after joining Rovers from Northern Pride.

He holds a UK passport, so he will not count on the Red Devils’ overseas quota.

Watson added: “Due to the club’s situation, we have had to find a bit of a gem like we did when we brought [Kriss] Brining in.

“Connor has shown good ability when he has come off the bench for Featherstone, he is a threat from dummy half and I think he has been their better nine this year.

“I know they’ve got Cameron King but for me, Connor is a lot more of a threat and is a lot stronger. I’m looking forward to bringing him in and working with him.”
