Paper Talk: Toronto to re-sign former player, Burrell to play reserves & Frawley set for NRL return
We’ve had a scan through this morning’s papers.
Toronto to re-sign former player
Toronto Wolfpack are keen to secure the return of Canadian Quinn Ngawati, report League Express.
The Wolfpack have held talks with their former player regarding a return to Lamport Stadium, according to League Express. The 20-year-old was part of the inaugural Toronto squad and played three times under former head coach Paul Rowley.
Burrell to play reserves
Warrington Wolves believe cross-code recruit Luther Burrell is set to “benefit enormously” from the return of reserve rugby league, report League Weekly.
Wolves chief executive Karl Fitzpatrick told League Weekly: “Last season he was thrown in at the deep-end to a degree. He needs to make those mistakes away from the limelight, away from the Sky cameras. I think his game will develop massively in the reserves.”
Frawley set for NRL return
Matt Frawley is closing in on an NRL return after leaving Huddersfield Giants, report League Express.
The 24-year-old half-back is in talks with NRL Grand Finalists Canberra Raiders after returning Down Under, according to League Express. The Raiders are keen to add a playmaker to their roster after Aidan Sezer’s departure to the Giants.
Calls for NRL loans to SL
Former Wigan Warriors boss Michael Maguire has called on authorities to create a system whereby NRL clubs can loan players to Super League mid-season, report League Weekly.
Maguire told League Weekly: “The fact that you have to play first-grade over here to get your visa, that may create challenges. But for the sake of creating a better game there and here, I think it’s worth doing.”
Six new faces at Widnes
Widnes Vikings are trialling a host of players at present, including former Swinton forward Connor Dwyer, report League Express.
Back-rower Jordan Case, hooker Callum Wood, winger Kevin Brown, hooker Lewis Hulme and full-back Connor Williams are also on trial with the Vikings, according to League Express.
Super League ponder Exiles comeback
The possible return of the Exiles is set to be topic of discussion at a Super League board meeting this week, report League Weekly.
The return of the Exiles team is set to be discussed, despite the Rugby Football League recently ruling out a revival of the concept, according to League Weekly. Wigan Warriors chairman Ian Lenagan said: “Why on earth the RFL are saying it’s not a good idea is beyond my understanding. There’s a Super League meeting next week and I’m sure it will come up then. I’ve not had any conversations but instinctively I think it’ll be a great idea.”
