Saints stadium progressing well

St Helens have revealed that plans for a new stadium are progressing well and is on track for its 2011 opening.

Clearance work has been taking place at the site of the former UGB Glass Factory in the town and detailed designs and plans for the full stadium project are well underway.

The derelict 46-acre former United Glass site will be transformed into a £25 million 18,000 capacity stadium for the Saints and a multi-million pound Tesco Extra.

Saints Chief Executive Tony Colquitt said: “On July 15 2008, ourselves, alongside St Helens Council and developers Langtree as well as the other parties involved in the scheme, issued a statement celebrating the fact that the project would not be called in by the Government Office for the North West and therefore had received full planning permission and was on track to be completed by 2011.
 
“We have been working hard behind the scenes to ensure the progression of this project and are happy to report that the plans are still on track.
 
“Detailed specification and design plans are well underway and we are currently going through the tender process.
 
“Fans can be assured that this stadium will be a real trendsetter and be a venue to be proud of.”

The news follows an announcement today that Wakefield are pushing forward plans for a new stadium off Junction 30 of the M62.
