Preview: Hull KR v Warrington (Sat)
High-flying Hull KR take on Tony Smith’s revitalised Warrington side in the pick of this weekend’s Challenge Cup ties.
Both sides will fancy their chances of getting their hands on some silverware this season, especially Warrington who will be looking to ditch their underachievers tag of recent years.
Skipper Adrian Morley said: “It would be huge for the town of Warrington if we could get to Wembley and I think that’s definitely an achievable goal for us.
“The fans have been starved of success for too many years now. I think it was 1990 that they were last in the Challenge Cup final and it was in the seventies when the club last won the competition.
“Hull KR are flying high. They’re very tough to break down and beat, particularly at Craven Park. It’s going to be a massive challenge but we’ll go there with confidence and we’ll certainly have no fear.”
Back in 2006, Hull KR defeated Warrington at the same stage of the competition, back when Rovers were still in National League 1.
Rovers were beaten in the semi finals by St Helens that year, and veteran Stanley Gene hopes they can go one step further this year.
He said: “I’m getting older and I don’t think there’ll be another chance like this for me. It will probably be the only opportunity for me to get to the new Wembley stadium and play in a Carnegie Challenge Cup final.
“I’d love to get to Wembley with Hull KR, we’ve got a great chance of getting there but we need to concentrate. We’re looking forward to hopefully getting a good win but so will be Warrington, they’ll be full of confidence too.”
