Dewsbury Rams claimed the Co-operative Championship division one title with a 54-14 win over Keighley Cougars at Cougar Park.

The title means that the Rams have won automatic promotion to the Championship.

The Cougars, second in Championship one, will have the chance to gain promotion via the play-offs in October.

The home side claimed the first try after a scoreless first quarter, Jon Presley making the break and scoring himself, Danny Jones with the conversion.

The Rams replied through Kane Epati and took the lead when a chip created the space for the ball to be moved to the right and Bryn Powell touched down, Pat Walker converting both tries.

Walker and Jones traded penalties in the final moments before half time, making the interval score 14-8 in Dewsbury’s favour.

The Rams sealed the win in a devastating 20-minute period from the 50- to the 70-minute mark in which seven tries were scored, all but one converted by the prolific Walker.

Alex Bretherton touched down twice while Epati added a second to his first-half touch down; other tries came from Chris Spurr, Adam Robinson, Andy Bostock and Adam Smith.

The Cougars gained some consolation with the final try just minutes from time, fittingly scored by Presley who was arguably Keighley’s best player, Jones converting.
