Atkins to miss Four Nations
Warrington bound centre Ryan Atkins has pulled out of England‘s squad for the Four Nations tournament to have a wrist operation.
The 23-year-old star who played a part in helping Wakefield make the play-offs for only the second time in their Super League history is widely tipped to take over the England spot left by Keith Senior.
But Atkins told League Express newspaper that his fitness is the priority for the new season.
“It’s something I’ve put off for the last two years but I really want to get it right now I am joining a new team.
“It’s important to figure in the entire pre-season and prove myself at Warrington. Pre-season is when a team comes together and I want to be part of it.
“It would have been great to have been considered for England but it can’t be helped.”
The news leaves the door open for young Castleford star Michael Shenton to impress England coach Tony Smith.
