Choose your greatest Challenge Cup shock
Rugby League fans have four more weeks in which to enter the RFL’s poll to find the greatest Challenge Cup giant-killing act of all time.
As part of the 113th anniversary of the sport’s oldest and most prestigious knockout competition, the RFL has launched a search for the biggest Cup shock of all.
Hundreds of supporters have already responded to the appeal by sending details of their favourite David versus Goliath Cup moment and the RFL is urging more fans to submit their memories of famous Challenge Cup battles.
Recent submissions have come from supporters of Halifax community club Siddal, who defeated the professionals of Doncaster 26-0 in the third round of this year’s Carnegie Challenge Cup. That win saw Siddal became the latest members of a celebrated group of clubs who have defied the odds in the Challenge Cup down the years.
Ever since the amateurs of Eastmoor held the highly fancied Stockport to a 3-3 draw in the competition’s inaugural year of 1897, Challenge Cup folklore has been littered with tales of heroic deeds by clubs and players who were inspired by the magic of the Cup.
“From the entries we have already received it’s clear that the Carnegie Challenge Cup continues to hold a special and exclusive place in the hearts of Rugby League fans the world over,” said the RFL’s Media Manager John Ledger.
“Siddal’s victory underlined the magical quality of the Cup and I’m sure all the Co-operative Championships teams who were drawn against Engage Super League opposition in the fourth round will be hoping to emulate their feat.”
Fans are asked to send an e-mail with the subject ‘Greatest Challenge Cup Giant-Killing Act’ to john.ledger@rfl.uk.com stating the match, what year it was played and a 50-100 word explanation detailing why the tie was so special to them.
Everyone who submits their entry before the closing date of Friday April 9 will be entered into a draw to win a pair of tickets for the 2010 Carnegie Challenge Cup Final at Wembley on Saturday August 28.
Tickets for the 2010 Carnegie Challenge Cup Final are currently on sale, priced from just £21. Until Friday March 26, the RFL is offering complimentary upgrades on all ticket bands, with the exception of £76 tickets, for the Wembley showdown. For example, anyone purchasing a £31 ticket will automatically be upgraded to a £41 ticket.
