My Set of Six: with Sheffield half-back Anthony Thackeray featuring 1895 Cup win & dislocated elbows
In our new feature, we’re asking you, the fans, plus players, coaches and other rugby league personalities to give us their answers to our set of six questions.
Sheffield half-back Anthony Thackeray is our latest guest on My Set of Six…
Favourite away ground?
Leigh Sports Village, Leigh. Its an immaculate pitch and a nice stadium – and the Keepmoat Stadium at Doncaster runs it pretty close.
Favourite player?
I like to look at kids coming through so I like Harry Newman at Leeds, he’s a good kid with a lot of talent and is tough as well. I played with him at Featherstone so I’m probably a bit biased.
Looking in the past and being a half-back myself, I always liked watching Andrew Johns and Johnathan Thurston.
Favourite memory?
Winning the 1895 Cup last year with Sheffield at Wembley was unreal and it was made even more special by having my son as mascot.
Worst memory?
It would have to be dislocating my elbow at Leigh a couple of years ago or crushing my palate against London.
Best match you’ve seen?
I’m a Hull lad and still have friends who play there so their first Challenge Cup win in 2005 was pretty special.
Your wish for the future of rugby league?
I just wish for rugby league to get back on its feet and grow again. It’s a special game that is full of good people so when we come out of this pandemic on the other side, we can continue where we left off and build on it.
