Barrow shock Cas – Cup round-up
Barrow pulled off the shock of the round with a 34-28 victory over Super League side Castleford.
Jamie Rooney scored two tries and kicked five goals as the Raiders condemned the Tigers to an early cup exit, as Steve McCormack masterminded his second cup victory with a lower league team over Castleford, following Widnes’ 14-4 triumph in the 2006 competition.
Blackpool were another team to defeat opposition higher than them in the league pyramid, as they came from behind to see off Championship side Whitehaven 24-18 at Fylde. Half back Martin Ainscough scored a hat-trick of tries to increase the pressure on Haven boss Ged Stokes, who has seen his side make a poor start to the season.
Third round giantkillers Siddal failed to repeat the heroics of their 26-0 win over Doncaster as they fell to a 34-2 defeat against Batley. Siddal coach Lee Greenwood watched on as his Bulldogs team mates ran in six tries to progress to the fifth round.
Last season’s finalists Huddersfield sent a message to their rivals with an impressive 40-12 victory over Hull KR. Danny Brough, Kevin Brown and Luke Robinson ran the show as they opened up a 22-0 first half lead before cruising to victory with further scores in the second half.
Salford’s nightmare weekend was compounded by a 30-8 defeat at Catalans. The Reds had to endure a lengthy coach journey owing to problems caused by the volcanic eruption in Iceland, and the result added to their woe. Leigh had better luck, as they set off on the long road home after a hard fought 32-20 win at Limoux.
Coming the other way, Toulouse put up a good fight but were ultimately outclassed in a 56-16 defeat at St Helens while Lezignan never made it to Widnes, and their fourth round tie will be re-arranged.
Harlequins put their early season troubles behind them with a well earned 23-16 win over Wakefield, with Tony Clubb scoring a brace of tries, while Leeds defeated Hull 48-24 in the other all Super League tie, Ryan Hall grabbing four tries.
Elsewhere, Super League leaders Wigan saw off Sheffield 50-34 in a repeat of the 1998 final, Halifax beat Swinton 56-4 and Bradford thrashed Dewsbury 50-0.
Championship leaders Featherstone put up a good fight at Warrington, but a hat-trick from Richie Myler, plus braces from Chris Riley and David Solomona helped the Wolves win 48-24 to start their defence of the trophy. Rhys Hanbury scored his first two tries for Crusaders as they won 58-8 away at York, while Championship 1 side Hunslet progressed with a 42-12 win over divisional rivals Oldham.
