King: Wire won’t give up crown easy

Matt King has warned Huddersfield to expect a hell of a battle as Warrington seek to defend the Carnegie Challenge Cup.

The two Engage Super League heavyweights meet in the clash of the fifth round on Saturday and punters will find it hard to pick a winner but Wolves centre King is hoping his team will have the edge thanks to their heroics at Wembley last year.

Warrington beat the Giants 25-16 to claim the Cup for the first time since 1974 and the celebrations and team bonding that came as a result are something that King is desperate to taste again.

Matt King said: “We achieved something as a group that has given us all a lifetime of happy memories.

“Doing what we did last year does give us a boost and inspiration for this year’s competition.

“It’s good to look back to those good times and now we’ve got a chance to get some more great memories if we can do it again.”

King admits, though, that he is wary of the threat posed by Huddersfield despite beating them in Engage Super League in February.

King scored two tries in the 14-10 win at The Galpharm – the venue for Saturday’s Cup clash.

But he warned: “Neither last year’s Cup final or the win earlier in the season will have any bearing on this game.

“We can take a little bit of confidence from the two results but we know we’ve got a tough fixture ahead of us.

“It is harder to defend a title than to win it the first time. Everyone wants to take your scalp if you are the holders.”
