Brits Down Under: Burgess’ 150th NRL game, Thompson impressive & Sutton’s outstanding stats
We have taken a look at how the British contingent got on in round 11 of the NRL.
Herbie Farnworth
The Broncos certainly came out with much intent in the first half and certainly made life difficult for Craig Bellamy’s side, but the Storm’s attacking flair became too much in the second half and in the end, Brisbane succumbed to yet another loss. After having an effort ruled out earlier in the game, Farnworth made up for it by securing his third try of the season in the first half against Melbourne. However, the Broncos were still completely outshone by a lightning Storm side as they failed to keep up with their opponents pace. Overall, the 20-year-old looked much more comfortable with a switch back onto the wing and by the end of the game he had recorded 100 metres from 11 carries, a try and a line break.
George Williams
There may have been no try to celebrate or another try assist to add to his season tally this week but Williams continues to make a solid name for himself in the NRL while forming a great halves partnership alongside Jack Wighton. The pair both look to utilise their strong in-play kicking game and that was certainly evident in the win over the Rabbitohs with Williams totalling just short of 300 metres with the boot in the win over South Sydney while running for 70 metres and making 15 tackles.
Luke Thompson
In only his third NRL appearance, the 25-year-old was again in impressive form as Canterbury secured their second win of the year with an inspiring performance against top four chasing Newcastle on Sunday. Overall, Thompson was big threat with the ball in hand as well as being influential defensively and he made 133 metres, 48 post contact metres and 35 tackles while continuing to prove his worth down under.
Ryan Sutton
The 25-year-old was in inspiring form coming off the bench and in the game against South Sydney he put together another impressive and dependable display. Sutton led the Raiders in tackles throughout a game with 47 to his name whilst also recording the third most metres with 116 from 17 carries. On average, Sutton runs for 86 metres and 28 tackles per game.
Tom Burgess
The Rabbitohs may have succumbed to a loss but one man who consistently looks to be in strong form is Burgess. The big man has been a driving force for the Rabbitohs all year and again he looked menacing with the ball in his hand as he used his huge motor to rack up the metres in the loss to Canberra. In his 150th NRL appearance, the barnstorming front-rower made the most metres by a Souths player with 175 along with 84 post contact metres, a line break and 23 tackles. So far this season, Burgess leads his side in run metres with 1,492 and has the fifth most tackles with 277.
Elliott Whitehead
A big voice and leader in the Canberra back-row, he always finds himself in the thick of the action. In the win over South Sydney, Whitehead added 34 tackles to his season tally while running for 60 metres from seven carries and securing a try assist. So far this year, the England and Great Britain international has the second most tackles (332), the most line breaks (9) and the joint second most tries (4) all by a Raiders player.
