Mogg to retire

Canberra centre Adam Mogg has announced his intention to retire at the end of the current season.

Mogg, 33, has been suffering from a chronic knee problem but the former Catalans Dragons player hopes to play a part in the Raiders’ finals campaign after undergoing surgery.

Mogg has made over 100 NRL appearances with Parramatta and during two stints with the Raiders, who he rejoined this year after leaving for Super League in 2006.

“I think my body has decided to retire on me. I’ve been pretty fortunate in my career to go through injury free, but the last four months my knee has been troubling me and I need to think about the quality of life after footy,” Mogg said.

“I have two kids and they’re important to me and I want to make sure I can give them everything and not be injured for the rest of my life.”

Mogg said he was keen to continue next year and was in negotiations with the Raiders, but decided he wouldn’t be able to put in the quality work he has in his career to date.

“I wanted to play again and I spoke to Don Furner about it and we were getting close to a deal, but not being able to train the way I like has been frustrating and if I feel like I cant improve as a player there’s no point in playing.”

Still a chance to play this season Mogg said he would be fighting hard for a spot as the Raiders continued on in September and had high hopes for the team on Saturday night against Penrith.

“I’m going to do my best to make sure I can get back to full fitness and make myself available for selection,” Mogg said. “It’s a big game and they’ll be working hard to win it and if I can come back and be a part of it I will.”
