Wildcats snap up Smith

Wakefield Wildcats have signed New Zealand Test halfback Jeremy Smith on a one-year contract.

He moves to Belle Vue after spending two years playing in the Engage Super League with Salford City Reds.

Jeremy, who is 29, was born in Huntly, New Zealand and can play at both scrum half and stand off half. He has played three times for his country and represented Aotearoa Maori in the 2000 World Cup that was played in Europe.

He joined Salford City Reds in 2009 from South Sydney in Australia and he has played 44 Super League games for the Greater Manchester club. He started his senior professional career in Australia with St George before moving to Parramatta Eels in 2005.

Smith played 13 first-grade games with the Eels and then signed for South Sydney in 2007 playing 26 games in their famous red and green colours before switching to Super League.

John Kear, the Wakefield Head Coach and Director of Rugby, said: “We’re delighted that Jeremy has agreed to sign for us. He’s an international quality player and will add an extra competitive edge in the middle of the field.

“He’s an exciting footballer and has played at the highest levels. That kind of experience will be useful as we bring through some of the younger players we’re developing at Belle Vue, as well as adding something extra to our side.

“It’s also a major advantage for us that Jeremy has experience of Super League. He will be aware of the challenges we face in 2011 and be fully prepared.”

Smith said, “I’m very grateful for the opportunity to come and play at this club. I have been speaking to John Kear and I can’t wait to get started and get the team around the park.”
