Morrison handed Wakefield captaincy

Wakefield have appointed Australian back-rower Glenn Morrison as their club captain for 2011.

Morrison, 34, replaces Jason Demetriou who left the club at the end of the season and has since signed a deal with Championship side York.

Wildcats Head Coach John Kear said: “After much consideration the coaching staff decided to offer Glenn the captaincy as reward for a magnificent on field season in 2010, but also because of the impact that he has on the club off the field aswell.

“It is obviously a vital appointment not only because of the role a captain plays in the group dynamics of the team, but also because it is the final year of this great clubs tenure at Belle Vue and the person appointed as captain had to be deemed to be suitable in such circumstances, and Glenn obviously is.”

Morrison moved to Belle Vue before the start of last season following a three-year stint at Bradford. The former County Origin representative played for Balmain, North Sydney, North Queensland and Parramatta in the NRL before coming to these shores.

Morrison added: “I was delighted when John offered me the captaincy role. It is an honour to captain such a great, traditional team and I feel very proud that I have been chosen.

“Along with all the other players and staff at the Club, I will strive to work as hard as I can with our franchise license and I really look forward to leading my team to success in 2011.”
