Ferguson wins Scotland award

Wakefield Wildcats second rower Dale Ferguson has been chosen as Scotland Rugby League’s Player of the Year.

The 22-year-old will receive the Dave Valentine Award after starring in Scotland‘s Alitalia European Cup campaign, featuring in the matches against Wales, France and Ireland.

The winner of the award is chosen by a panel consisting of national coach Steve McCormack, assistant Dave Rotheram and manager George Fairbairn.

“Dale was totally new to our set-up this year and came in and performed like he was used to international rugby,” said McCormack.

“He was tremendous throughout the European Cup and I look forward to him becoming a mainstay of our side for years to come.”

The Dave Valentine Award is named after the former Huddersfield star and Great Britain captain who is regarded as Scotland‘s finest ever rugby league player.

Hooker Giles Lomax, who plays for Edinburgh Eagles, was named as the best player for Scotland A while Jordan Rice, who attends Hull University, received the Roy Kinnear Award as Scotland Students Player of the Year.

The Graeme Thompson Award for the top under-18 player went to Shaun Gray, who plays for Glenrothes.
