Quins appoint Gus Mackay as new CEO

Harlequins have confirmed that former international cricketer Gus Mackay has been appointed as the club’s new chief executive.

Mackay will replace Paul Blanchard, who is leaving to take up a similar post at The Surrey Sports Park.

The 43-year-old has held a number of senior management positions within cricket and made three appearances for the Zimbabwe national team during his playing days.

His previous employers include professional county sides Surrey, Susses and Leicestershire.

“I am looking forward to joining Harlequins Rugby League. I am aware of the significant challenges which we face with this sport in London, however, I am confident that we can make a real impact and build on the good work and strong base which exists,” he told the club’s website.

Harlequins chairman David Hughes is confident that Mackay’s appointment will allow the club to progress.

“Gus has enjoyed considerable success in professional sport over a number of years and I am delighted to welcome him on board. His appointment is not only positive for this club, but also good news for the continued growth and development of rugby league in London,” he said.

“Pre-season preparations are going well and as we embark on a new season, with a new head coach, I am full of optimism and very confident that with Gus at the helm, Harlequins Rugby League can look forward to a very positive year.”

Mackay starts his new role immediately and will initially work alongside Blanchard during a handover period.
