Youth is key for Cartwright

Gold Coast coach John Cartwright is “excited” by the potential offered by the younger members of his squad.

Speaking at the Titans’ season launch event today, Cartwright revealed his thoughts on how they could perform in 2011.

“It is exciting to have a lot of young guys around, and due to a few injuries last season we were able to give them the first grade experience,” he said.

“This year they’ve got the chance to take that step further.”

In recent seasons they have blooded a number of young players including wingers Kevin Gordon and David Mead, hooker Kayne Lawton and half-back Jordan Rankin.

And these players are more than ready to catapult the Titans into a successful 2011, according to Cartwright.

He added: “There is probably now 6 or 7 of them now vying for a few spots which makes it a very pleasing thing to have and it is great for the future of the club.”

The Titans reached the preliminary NRL final last season, but crashed to a heavy 32-6 defeat to the in-form Sydney Roosters.

For skipper Scott Prince, the defeat only serves as a tool to motivate his players.

“I think the disappointment really lingers in the back of our minds, we have been working on our fitness and as you can see most of the guys look stronger and fitter and it comes down to being more consistent throughout the season”, said Prince.

The Titans will have the perfect opportunity to prove their worth – they face reigning premiers St George in the NRL‘s opening round on March 12.
