Wright in at Barrow

Nigel Wright, once the costliest teenage player in Rugby League is the new coach of Barrow Raiders after they made the decision to axe Garry Schofield after just five games.

Wright commenced his coaching apprenticeship in Australia and once served as assistant at Warrington Wolves before being given the job as Schofield’s right hand man in Cumbria. Now he will make his own way in the Barrow hot-seat that has seen the likes of Paul Crarey, Dave Clark, Steve Deakin, Steve McCormack and now Schofield come and go.

Raiders chairman Des Johnston told the Barrow Raiders official website “It is disappointing that things have not worked out with Garry but for the good of the club the Board felt that things could not continue as they were. It was not an easy decision, and one not taken lightly, but nonetheless one which we had to make. There have been concerns about on-field performance and issues regarding off-field activities, discipline and the conduct of some players.

“Garry is, and will remain, a true legend of rugby league and we are pleased that we were able to at least give him opportunity to take on what we regard as a significant role in the game. We are very grateful for his efforts on behalf of Barrow Raiders not least in raising the profile of the club so significantly and we wish him well in his future endeavours.”

Wright has taken charge with immediate effect and his first task is to prepare the team to take on Leigh this Saturday.

Johnston added, “Nigel has a good coaching C.V. and I am sure that the players will respond well to him. Martin Clawson will continue his very good work as trainer/conditioner.”
