Scorpions want improvement

South Wales Scorpions skipper Aled James has conceded his team-mates need to improve even further if they are to challenge Workington in Sunday’s Co-operative Championship One fixture.

The Scorpions have won their last two matches – beating Oldham 40-20 and then winning 66-32 against Gateshead – but James says Workington Town will offer a different challenge.

James said: “Our focus needs to be upped for the Workington game, especially around the middle.

“We need to be tougher on ourselves as we conceded 32 points against Gateshead and even though we won, that wasn’t acceptable by any standard. We need to toughen up and be more ruthless.”

Joint Workington coach Gary Charlton expects Jarrad Stack and Graeme Mattinson to both be passed fit for Sunday’s match, despite them both failing to complete last week’s 34-32 reverse against Doncaster.

Charlton said: “Our last three games have been very hard to take, and we can only blame ourselves. We’ve lost on the last play of the game against Rochdale and Doncaster.

“We’ve got to be learning the lesson about how to finish a game and put a game to bed.”

Workington Town will travel to South Wales on Saturday in a bid to be as fresh as possible for Sunday’s match.

Charlton added: “Hopefully we can play to our ability, because if we can do that then we can beat a lot of teams in this league.”
