Cup no distraction for Leigh

Leigh Centurions assistant coach Paul Rowley insists that the upcoming Northern Rail Cup final will not distract his side from a crucial Co-operative Championship clash with Batley Bulldogs.

The Centurions take on Halifax in Blackpool on July 17, but first must focus on a top of the table game with the Bulldogs.

“The final hasn’t had a mention,” Rowley said. “Batley are right up there with us at the moment, we’re all level on points at the top with Featherstone, so this game could have a massive bearing on where we finish.

“It’s a real six pointer, and Karl Harrison has done a tremendous job with Batley. They never lack any passion, and we expect them to put in an improved performance after they lost at York last week.

“It will be a tough battle and we’ll definitely have to be at our best.”

The Centurions’ only injury absentee at present is prop Rickey Bibey, who is now expected to miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery on his troublesome Achilles tendon problem.

Leigh also add dual registration three-quarter Tom Armstrong to the squad that won in Toulouse two weeks ago.

Batley coach Harrison says his side will learn from their 18-10 defeat at York City Knights – their first loss in six matches.

“We have to get back on the horse and ride it this week,” Harrison said.

If Harrison decides to make changes to the team that lost at York, centre Daley Williams and loose forward Ashley Lindsay are available again.
