Morrison signs player-coach deal

Veteran Wakefield forward Glenn Morrison has signed a new one-year contract with the club which will see him take up a player-coach role.

Morrison, who captained the Wildcats in 2011, will link up with Head Coach Richard Agar as assistant whilst also being in charge of the club’s under 20’s academy side in 2012.

The 35-year-old, who previously had a stint with the Bradford Bulls, has made 44 appearances for the Wildcats since joining them at the start of the 2010 season.

Morrison stated: “It’s been a long process obviously with a new coach coming in and the coaching side being part of the contract, so we had to make sure it was all good for both parties and I’m excited about the prospects.

“I’ll be an Assistant Coach during the day and then Head Coach of the 20’s so I get to have my own side and show what I can do there.  That’s what I want to move into eventually so it’s a good chance for me.”

On the playing front, Morrison is excited at the new signings that the club have attracted to West Yorkshire and believes there’s every chance of doing well in Super League XVII.

“There’s some experience coming in which we probably lacked last year,” admitted Morrison. “I think that’s only going to benefit the club and a lot of the boys have got a number of games under their belt and have come from successful clubs, so it’s just a matter of gelling them all together.

“Obviously we want to improve on where we finished last year and not having the minus four at the start of the year will help that.  

“I think with the quality we’ve got in here and a new coach with fresh ideas, then I think we have to look for the top eight.”
