Super League games go back behind closed doors as return of fans plans scrapped
Castleford defeated St Helens 28-14 in their last game in front of supporters.
The plans to allow fans back in to Super League games at the end of the month have been scrapped following the latest Government guidance on coronavirus.
It means that Wigan’s game against St Helens will now take place behind closed doors at the AJ Bell Stadium on Tuesday September 29, as part of a double header live on Sky Sports with Salford’s game against Warrington.
On Wednesday September 30, Huddersfield will host Hull KR at the John Smith’s Stadium, and Leeds welcome Catalans at Headingley, with both games shown live on the Our League app for season ticket holders.
Castleford’s game against Hull will take place on Thursday October 1, live on Sky Sports.
Earlier, RFL chief executive Ralph Rimmer reacted to the news that the planned pilot events, and the return of crowds to elite from October 1, had been postponed.
He told the BBC: “It really does tremendous damage to the sector, but I’m not just speaking about rugby league here.
“All sport requires fans, just as over other industry does out there as well. We need clients. That’s what we’re dependent upon and that’s what enables sport to generate the income that it does and contribute to the economy.
“Sport currently contributes something in the region of £16bn into the UK economy, 600,000 jobs and those figures go a long way to securing people’s physical and mental health.”
