NRL mourns Beetson passing

NRL clubs have today expressed their sadness following the death of legendary player Arthur Beetson.

Beetson a former Balmain, Eastern Suburbs, Parramatta and Hull KR player, died aged 66 after suffering a heart attack.

Known affectionately as ‘Artie’, Beetson skippered Australia and played for Queensland in the inaugural State of Origin series before later going on the coach the Maroons.

He also coached Eastern Suburbs and later Cronulla.

A statement from the Sydney Roosters read: The Sydney Roosters are devastated to hear about the sudden death of club and rugby league legend, Arthur Beetson.
 
“One of rugby league’s most well respected and liked characters, Artie will always hold a special place in the hearts of everyone associated with the Roosters.
 
“His combined passion for Club, State and his indigenous heritage was inspiring to all Australians and will never be forgotten.”

Balmain Tigers Chairman David Trodden added: “Arthur is one of the greatest players to ever pull on the Tigers jersey. He played in the 1966 Grand Final against St George and was a member of the famous 1969 squad despite missing the Grand Final.”

“He was one of the best ball playing prop forwards the game has ever seen. He was very tough, had great strength and was quite quick for a big man.

“Arthur is in the Balmain Tigers Hall of Fame and his achievements as a player and later as a coach were incredible, culminating in him being named as one of the Immortals of the game.”
