Obst set for Cougars move

Keighley Cougars coach Jason Demetriou has pulled off a major coup by swooping for former team mate Sam Obst.

The former Wakefield and Hull FC hooker/half back broke onto the scene in 2004 whilst playing for Whitehaven, helping them to a National League 1 Grand Final and scooping the league player of the year award.

Since then, Obst has made over 150 Super League appearances, but left Hull FC mid-way through a two-year deal after he was informed he was surplus to requirements.

Cougars Coach, Demetriou, a former team-mate at Wakefield, has moved to sign 30-year-old Obst for the newly promoted Cougars as they look to challenge in the Co-operative Championship in 2012.

Speaking to local press, Demetriou said “Obviously I am over the moon that Sam’s set to join us. He will add real quality to an already strong-looking team and he will have a huge impact off the field with our young players.

“His signing will also create some genuine optimism on the terraces. Sam’s dad played for Keighley back in the 1970s and was well respected by all and I am sure Sam will more than follow in his father’s footsteps.”
