Aiton doubt for Wakefield

Wakefield hooker Paul Aiton could miss Sunday’s trip to Warrington after suffering a dead leg in the defeat by Huddersfield.

Aiton, 26, who captained Papua New Guinea in the 2010 Four Nations, joined the Wildcats from Cronulla in the close season and has been an ever present so far this season.

His injury capped a frustrating afternoon for coach Richard Agar, who saw his side fightback from 20-4 down to be within one score with 25 minutes to play, only to fall away in the final quarter against the new Super League leaders.

He told the club’s official website: “We felt we pushed them.  Huddersfield don’t give you an awful lot but I thought today they might have been guilty of giving us an opportunity and a chance.

“I thought for a period in the second half we had some momentum and I thought we could take it.

“If we get frustrated and start changing things it creates some doubt in the players and for us it’s remaining strong and believing in what we’re doing.”

The Wildcats have now lost four on the spin after their opening day victory at Widnes, going down against Hull KR (22-10), Bradford (36-18), Hull (14-10) and Huddersfield (32-14).

Agar added: “We’ve played some really tough teams.

“We’ve been into games up to our necks for really long periods but it’s about stringing those ruthless 80 minute performances together which we haven’t done at the moment.

“I do feel that we’re learning about each other all the time and I really don’t think we’re that far away.”
