Clark impressed with Scorpions cup performance

South Wales coach Dave Clark has praised his side’s set completion despite a 84-28 loss to Halifax.

Clark was pleased his side held onto the ball and didn’t gift Halifax as much ball as they have done in previous games so far this season.

Clark also pointed out the Scorpions only the second side the score more than three tries against Halifax all season.

Clark said: “It was simply the quality of their attack that beat us which you would expect with Halifax being in the top two sides outside of Super League.

“We knew what to expect when we prepared for this game. It was always going to be a challenge for us and at stages we were a lot better than we were against Crusaders.

“Certainly our shape was a lot better than I’ve seen this year which is very positive. We were up against a different calibre of player at Halifax and as a coach I feel we got a lot more out of the game than we were expecting.

“It’s a massive positive for us scoring the number of tries we did when other teams at Halifax’s level have failed to do so against them. We now need to use what we’ve learned to build some consistency in our side and improve our league performances. We still need to work hard on our defence but I’d like to think that if we’d played like that against some teams in our own division then we would have come away with a few victories.”

Clark was also encouraged to see his side come away without scathing injuries which have plighted the Scorpions so far this season, and expects his side to focus 100 per cent on gaining promotion to the Championship.

He said: “Everyone seems to be fresh. Hopefully that will help build some consistency to our team. We’ve two big home games coming up starting with Whitehaven this Sunday. We’ve been four weeks on the road so these two home league games are important to us. We need to get some points on the board and start to challenge the top four.”
