Critics proved wrong – Wellens

Paul Wellens says that the team performance St Helens produced on Monday night has put the talk of them being a one man team to bed.

After the defeat to Wigan in the Challenge Cup the media’s general opinion was that if, like the Warriors did, you stop James Roby then you stop St Helens.

Wellens, 32, feels this has now been disproved. He told Love Rugby League: “James Roby is a fantastic player, he would stand-out in any team in the world. But, like we showed against Leeds we all have a responsibility within the team to play to the best of our ability.

“James Roby can’t do his job if the forwards are not doing theirs, Jonny Lomax can’t do his job unless James Roby is doing his properly. If we all do our jobs the best we can it makes everybody elses easier.

“Obviously James Roby is vital to us but the scary thing is that he is still improving and he works hard week in week out in training to become a better player.”

Wigan are again the opposition for Saints at the Magic Weekend and while club-captain Wellens acknowledges how well they are playing he is backing his side for a win.

“They are the form team in the competition, everyone knows that. We will have to play well to win but at the moment we are constantly improving. We know what we have to do.”
