Finn plays down kicking achievement

Featherstone’s Liam Finn walked off the field of play on Thursday off the back of a 60-12 annihilation of Keighley Cougars knowing not only had they progressed to the semi finals of the Northern Rail Cup, but also in the knowledge that the kicker had achieved something spectacular.

Finn’s 10 successful kicks on Thursday saw him put into the record books for having 41 successful consecutive goal attempts, which surpassed Barry Eaton’s 38. 

The accolade to a man blessed with real ability, dedication and the deepest level of sporting concentration imaginable.

The Rovers goal kicker put his achievement into perspective saying that, “I never felt that I was carrying a burden of expectation as the record drew nearer, but I could feel the excitement of the fans. Before each kick a deathly silence fell like in Rugby Union games.

“It was gratifying to give our fans something to get excited about, and satisfying for their sake when the record breaker went over.  

“But look at it this way. Nobody congratulates Mick Haley when he puts 41 tackles in. What I do is part of the whole effort of the team.”

His Head Coach, Daryl Powell paid tribute for his efforts. He said, “Liam has been the best player in the Championship for the last two seasons and that takes some doing in this tightest of competitions.”

Featherstone progressed through to the semi finals of the Northern Cup Final where they will go up against current holders Leigh Centurions.
