Jack Welsby deserved Harry Sunderland Trophy, says James Roby

St Helens captain James Roby led the tributes to teenage match-winner Jack Welsby after his last-second try helped the champions to an 8-4 win over Wigan in the 2020 Super League Grand Final.

Roby, who was named the Harry Sunderland Trophy winner as man of the match after making 60 tackles, told Sky Sports: “It’s unbelievable, the way the game ended.

“Full credit to Wigan, it was a real tough game, but I think with Jack we probably deserved this for that moment of magic from nowhere. We were teeing it up for it to go to sudden death and he does that.

“It was a lucky bounce but fair play to him, I’m made up for him. He’s a young kid who works so hard and he’s won us the Grand Final.

“We’ve done it, we’ve gone back to back. It’s a great achievement and it’s against Wigan as well. I’m sure our supporters will be made up and jumping up and down.”

Welsby, the youngest player on the pitch, grabbed his try after following up a long range drop-goal attempt from winger Tommy Makinson that rebounded off a post and bounced wickedly for Wigan full-back Bevan French.

“I honestly can’t put my feeling into words,” Welsby told Sky Sports.

“I backed Tommy to kick it but I just chased as hard as I could. You couldn’t write it, I’m made up.

“I don’t think I’ll ever top anything like that in my career.”
