Alternative Super League Dream Team: Who could have made it?
There have been a number of standout players who missed out on a spot in the 2020 Super League Dream Team, so we’ve decided to create an alternative XIII.
The actual 2020 Super League Dream Team: French; Inu, King, Hurrell, Handley; Sezer, Lomax; Walmsley, McShane, Cooper, Tanginoa, Farrell, Knowles.
Alternative 2020 Super League Dream Team:
1 Lachlan Coote (St Helens)
Coote has been a superstar signing for St Helens. He had a dream year in 2019 with Saints, and he was sensational again this season. The Great Britain and Scotland international has scored eight tries and provided 14 assists in 13 Super League appearances this year.
2 Tom Davies (Catalans Dragons)
Davies is one of Super League’s most underrated players. He scored 13 tries in 11 games for the Dragons this term and played a big part in Steve McNamara’s side reaching the play-off semi-finals. His drives out of yardage are impressive, with the former Wigan winger having an average gain of 8.36 metres per carry.
3 Zak Hardaker (Wigan Warriors)
Hardaker has proven to be a brilliant signing for Wigan. He played the majority of the season at centre, where he excelled. The 29-year-old was one of the best players in Super League, with 67 tackle busts and 72 goals to his name in 20 appearances.
4 Jake Wardle (Huddersfield Giants)
What a season it was for Wardle. The 22-year-old scored five tries in 17 games for the Giants as well as busting 37 tackles and making nine clean breaks. Wardle is a sensational talent and Huddersfield have a very good player on their hands.
5 Regan Grace (St Helens)
The Welshman just gets better as each season goes by. Grace scored 10 tries in 17 games for Saints in Super League as well as making 20 clean breaks. The 23-year-old will be hoping to have another good year in 2021 as he heads into the World Cup with Wales.
6 Jackson Hastings (Wigan Warriors)
The 2019 Steve Prescott Man of Steel enjoyed a stellar first season with Wigan in 2020. The Great Britain international scored eight tries in 21 games for the Warriors as well as providing 18 assists and having 57 tackle busts.
7 Luke Gale (Leeds Rhinos)
The 32-year-old has been great coup for the Rhinos. Gale has made 17 appearances for Leeds this term, scoring four tries and providing 11 assists. The England international has a remarkable kicking game and he helped the Rhinos win the Challenge Cup at Wembley in October.
8 Ollie Partington (Wigan Warriors)
The 22-year-old established himself as a first team regular at his hometown club this year. Partington, who is an England Knights international, made 17 appearances for the Warriors and has a very good engine in the middle of the park. He plays with plenty of passion and drive which is good to see.
9 Daryl Clark (Warrington Wolves)
The Great Britain and England international made 18 appearances for Warrington in 2020 – and had more runs from dummy half than any other player in Super League with 101 to his name. The new rules certainly suit Clark’s style of play.
10 Ligi Sao (Hull FC)
The Samoa international has been a great addition not only for Hull, but for Super League as a whole. The 28-year-old has played 18 games for Hull, racking up 1,357 metres from 195 carries as well as making 28 offloads.
11 James Bentley (St Helens)
The Ireland international cemented himself as a regular in Saints’ first team this season – and it was very well deserved. Bentley’s style of play has drawn comparisons to John Bateman and he made 69 tackles in their Grand Final win over Wigan.
12 Michael Lawrence (Huddersfield Giants)
The Jamaica international played 18 games for his hometown club in 2020 and made more tackles than any other player in Super League with 749 to his name. Lawrence also made 1,602 metres from 244 carries.
13 Joe Cator (Hull FC)
The 22-year-old has been one of the signings of the season in the entire competition. Cator played 13 games for Hull in 2020, making 386 tackles and busting 14 tackles. Like Partington, Cator plays with plenty of heart and has a strong work ethic.
