Ferres eyes England chance

New Huddersfield signing Brett Ferres feels his move to the Galpharm Stadium will help enhance his England opportunities.

Ferres, 26, joined the Giants from Castleford last month and knows that he will have a real fight on his hands to secure a place in Steve McNamara’s side.

The versatile forward faces stiff competition from the likes of St HelensJon Wilkin, Leeds Rhinos Jamie Jones-Buchanan and Hull FC’s Danny Tickle, as well as NRL stars Gareth Ellis and Sam Burgess, for a place in McNamara’s 2013 World Cup squad.

Although the World Cup is more than a year away, Ferres knows consistent performances and earning a regular place in the Giants starting 13 will be key if he is to be in contention for an England place.

He said: “Hopefully this move to Huddersfield will make me a more consistent performer and get me back into England contention.

“I want to stay in the team every week and contribute to the Giants going as far as they can in the Play-Offs.”

The former Bradford and Wakefield has featured for England four times, all before the split of Great Britain, with his last appearance coming against Tonga in the inaugural Federation Shield Final six years ago.
