Sandercock pleased with Robins efforts in defeat

Hull KR coach Craig Sandercock was happy with his sides performance despite losing to Wigan in the final minutes on Sunday.

Rovers led 26-0 against the Warriors in the first half, before two tries shortly before half time swung the momentum in Wigan’s favour.

Wigan went onto win 42-36, and Sandercock was delighted with his side’s effort but had worries over their defence. 

He said: “Not many teams put 36 points on Wigan and we’ve come a long way since they beat us pretty easily at their home ground not long ago. So putting on a performance like that made me proud of them. Yes, we were disappointed; yes, we did let a couple of tries in that we’d normally stop but I’m here to talk about the positives and it bodes well for next season.

“We put 36 points on a team who have been conceding an average of 12 points a game. Our defence was disappointing but if you’d asked me after 35 minutes I’d have said the opposite.

“But that’s unfortunately been the story of our season. We’ve been a little bit too inconsistent in games and we need to work really hard on that during the off-season and come out next year and get our season off to a really good start.”

Sandercock expressed concerns over David Hodgson, who was seriously injured scoring a try. 

Sandercock said: “Dave Hodgson is a big worry as it looks like he’s torn a hamstring. He did it when he scored that try and as usual, we lost a player during the course of the game. It was pretty significant to us as we had to re-juggle our left edge and Wigan, to their credit, exposed us badly out there.”
