Stuart Fielden to leave Wigan
Rugby league’s most expensive player, Stuart Fielden, will leave Wigan when his contract expires at the end of the season.
Fielden, 33, cost the Warriors £450,000 when he made the switch from Bradford back in 2006, joining old coach Brian Noble at the DW Stadium.
He has struggled with injuries in the past two seasons, restricting him to just two appearances, and will now move on.
Head Coach Shaun Wane said: “It was a very difficult decision to make not to offer Stuart a further contract. He has been a wonderful player and a superb role model. His commitment and attitude to training and getting back to fitness after two terrible years is a real credit to him.
“Now fully fit, Stuart is at the stage of his career where he is looking for a regular place in the side and with stiff competition for places we are unable to guarantee that here at Wigan. We feel sure that a move elsewhere would be in his best interest. We thank Stuart for his superb service and wish him all the best for the future.”
Fielden made his debut against Warrington in June 2006, the first of 141 appearances in seven years for the club, during which time he won a 2010 Super League Grand Final winners ring.
