Morley tips Ben Currie for big things

Warrington captain Adrian Morley has hailed young second-row Ben Currie as a future superstar.

Currie, 18, made five Super League appearances for the Challenge Cup winners last year and Morley thinks big things lie ahead for the teenager if he can keep his head down.

Wolves coach Tony Smith has not brought in any fresh faces from outside the club this season, placing increasing responsibility on their current crop of youngsters coming through from the academy.

Morley said: “We’ve got some great youngsters coming through and Ben Currie in particular, he’s going to be a superstar.

 “It’s a funny sport Rugby League, even though you don’t want these youngsters to take your spot you try and help them in whatever way you can and they’re very receptive. I was trying to keep with (Ben) Currie when we were hill running, I did for the first few but then he just left me for dead, if he keeps going he’s got a bright future for sure.”

Currie, Gareth O’Brien and Rhys Evans are just three homegrown talents from the club’s academy handed a squad number for the 2013 season, and they’ve been catching the eye in pre-season training.

Morley’s front-row partner Paul Wood added: “Gaz O’Brien has come back from a knee injury and Ben Currie has properly come into the first team, so although we haven’t made new signings, those lads have made us stronger for this year and in a way have been new signings.”

Warrington kick off their Super League campaign when they host Castleford on Sunday.
