Championship Team of the Week: Round 3
Premier Sports Performance of the Week – Leigh Centurions
Leigh Centurions overcame a long journey north and the disruptions of a delayed kick-off to inflict Whitehaven’s first defeat of the season in convincing fashion.
The Centurions triumphed 28-14 at the Recreation Ground after a local power cut meant that the game was put back by almost an hour.
Leigh coach Paul Rowley said: “The players were brilliant with how they went about things. They didn’t let anything affect them. We had a very good attitude, and the players handled the delayed kick-off fantastically well.
“Whitehaven were very confident, and had every reason to be so with a 100 per cent record. For us to come away with that result – and to be fair we could have put it to bed a bit earlier – is hugely pleasing.”
Premier Sports Try of the Week – Tom Hemingway (Batley Bulldogs)
Tom Hemingway’s try was the highlight of Batley’s 42-4 win against York City Knights, earning praise from Bulldogs coach John Kear and highlighting the half-back’s impressive contribution in recent weeks.
Kear said: “Dan Fleming ran hard, produced a good offload, and then Miles Greenwood linked up with Ben Black. Ben then passed it on to Tom, and he beat the covering defence for a great try.
“Tom’s overall contribution has been very good, and he’s only missed one goal all season. He’s kicked 15 out of 16 goals this year, and while it’s important having someone who can kick goals like that, Tom’s also progressing with his overall play as his understanding with Ben Black develops.”
