Aston son set for Sheffield debut

Cory Aston, son of Sheffield Eagles Head Coach, Mark Aston is to get his first team debut this Sunday (7th April) as the Eagles play in the third round of the Challenge Cup.

The 18 year old who plays in the half back position, like his father before him, will be facing amateur side Leigh East at Don Valley Stadium, kick off 3.00pm.

The debut comes almost 15 years after Aston famously defeated Wigan in the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley, winning the Lance Todd Trophy for Man of the Match in the process and lifted Cory, then just a toddler onto his shoulders on the pitch for the post match celebrations.

Speaking of the debut, Aston senior said, “Cory has been playing great for the Academy side this year and he’s ready for the step up.”

“There is a lot of pressure and the spotlight will be on him, what with my history for at the club and being Head Coach but he’s worked hard and fully deserves his spot.”

Aston also looks set to bring back youngster Connor Scott into his 17 man squad but won’t make too many changes as he aims to rectify the Eagles first defeat in eight games after he saw his side lose on Bank Holiday Monday at Whitehaven.

Mark Aston added, “Like me, Cory is brimming with confidence and he’ll direct players around the field and tell them what to do.”

“It’s not just an exciting day for Cory but also for me as his dad, the rest of the family and I’m sure our fans will be looking forward to seeing him out there on Sunday.”

As a Challenge Cup game, season tickets are not valid and ticket for the game are priced at £10 for Adults, £5 for Concessions and £3 for Under 16s and Students and can be bought on the turnstile at the game.
