Premier Sports Performance of the Week – Hemel Stags

Hemel Stags gave hope to Championship One’s chasing pack by inflicting leaders North Wales Crusaders’ first defeat of the season.

Troy Perkins’ side triumphed after Mason Caton-Brown’s late try – his second of the afternoon – sealed an 18-10 win.

Perkins said: “The boys really dug in to get a result.

“The most pleasing thing about it was our defence.

“In the second half they threw a lot at us. We had eight or nine sets on our own line, so to not concede a try after half-time was a real credit to the effort of the boys in defence.

“We’re a pretty inexperienced team at this level but we’re punching above our weight, and all the hard work we’ve put in since November is starting to reap some rewards.”

Premier Sports Try of the Week – Mark Hobson (Oldham)

Oldham looked to be heading for a 32-all draw at South Wales Scorpions with less than a minute left on the clock.

But after Lewis Palfrey had missed a field goal attempt, loose forward Mark Hobson can up with a dramatic winning try in the closing seconds.

Oldham assistant coach Lee Spencer said: “South Wales were coming out of their own half and broke us up the middle, but then overplayed and lost the ball.

“David Cookson picked it up, got into contact with their winger, and offloaded to Mark Hobson.

“It was a bit of a strange place for him to pop up, but he showed a good bit of enthusiasm and won us the game by being alert.

“I thought there were still a couple of minutes left but the hooter went soon after, so it was a big play.”
