Swinton moving in right direction, says Chambers

Gary Chambers is convinced Swinton are moving in the right direction ahead of their crucial clash with Keighley at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday 3pm.

The Lions are currently one place above the relegation zone in the Championship on 20 points – three behind their Yorkshire rivals.

It’s a must-win game on Sunday but Lions coach Chambers believes victory over Hunslet and a defeat to Championship leaders Sheffield has seen the team make progress.

He said: “We felt there was loads of improvement in our performance against Sheffield and with a bit more quality and smartness we could start pushing these top teams.

“These big teams find a way to win. We can’t find a way to win those games just yet.

“That’s a sign of their superiority at the moment.”

The Lions matched Sheffield but for a 20 minute period after the interval when the Eagles stepped up a gear to record their 15th consecutive victory.

“We came in at 10-6 but we were pretty comfortable defensively,” said Chambers.

“We still turned far too much ball over and you can’t do that against top teams.

“That’s the difference between us and them at the moment. We just turn too much ball over.

“But we have shown we can defend and not too many teams could turn that much ball over and still be in the game.

“That bodes well it’s just a matter of trying to get some quality ball and playing smart in the right areas.

“I’ve been saying it for five weeks now and there are still improvements to come in us.

“The lads are adamant they felt really comfortable for all of the first half but it was just that 15-20 minute spell in the second.”
