New Sheffield contract for Taulapapa

Sheffield utility back Misi Taulapapa has agreed a new two-year deal with the club.

Taulapapa, 31, joined the Eagles back in 2010, having previously played in the NRL for New Zealand Warriors and Cronulla Sharks.

The new contract sees the vice captain, who has also played international rugby league for Samoa, extending his stay with the current Championship Champions until the end of the 2015 season.

Sheffield head coach Mark Aston said, “I’m highly delighted Misi has agreed this new deal, he’s been an integral part of the squad for a number of years now and it’s great that he will continue to be over the coming seasons.

“He can play across a number of positions, is good defensively and in attack and he continually gives 100%; he’s an excellent character to have at the club.

“It’s a massive boost for us at a crucial point of the season as we look to clinch the league leader’s shield for the first time and defend our Championship title.

“With some astronomical offers coming in from other clubs, its credit to what we are doing here that Misi has agreed to stay.”

Taulapapa has played on the wing for the Eagles this season but can also play in the full back and centre positions and recently covered the hooker position for part of the recent match at York.

His ability was recognised when he signed for Super League side Hull Kingston Rovers in 2011 but a change of coach at the Rovers saw him released and he re-joined the Eagles ahead of the 2012 season.

Taulapapa added, “I’m happy to be staying with the Eagles. I got some offers elsewhere but this is the club I want to be at.

“There is a really good team spirit and togetherness in the squad; it’s something that you just can’t create.  

“Winning the Grand Final last year was one of the highlights of my career and it’s our aim to do it again this year and top the table as well.”
