McCormack proud of Scotland achievements

Scotland coach Steve McCormack reiterated his pride at their achievements after the Bravehearts bowed out of the World Cup to holders New Zealand on Friday night.

He refused to be drawn over the issue of funding, after the Scotland Rugby League released a statement during the match that said their funding had been withdrawn as of Friday.

Instead, he heaped praise on the players that have created one of the stories of the tournament, going through the group stage unbeaten.

McCormack said: We’re disappointed at being knocked out of a World Cup, but when you look at the full story, no-one expected us to be in the quarter-finals.

“The bounce of the ball went the Kiwis’ way a couple of times. We dug deep in the second half. We could have collapsed but that’s not the Scotland way.

“There’s no disgrace in being beaten by the Kiwis. I’m immensely proud of what we’ve achieved.”

McCormack paid tribute to his captain, Danny Brough, who produced many moments of brilliance during the game including a clean break, a 40-20 kick, a chip and regather and a couple of high kick-offs which his side regathered.

“As the game went on, Danny started getting more quality ball. He did a lot of good things. But also David Scott was excellent on the wing and Ben Hellwell – he’s had a great tournament. Alex Hurst hasn’t got a club, but he’s been very good.” 

As for the future, McCormack is still keen to remain as head coach and will soon begin to plan the side’s assault on next year’s European Championships.

“We have to move forward,” he said. “This has been achieved on a shoestring budget. But it’s never been about finances for us. It’s about representing Scotland Rugby League.

“I’m obviously keen [to stay]. I’ll assess everything after the World Cup. I’ve always been proud of being involved with Scotland.”
