Hepworth forced to reitre

Featherstone utility Jonny Hepworth has been forced to retire from rugby league due to injury.

Hepworth, 30, has previously played for Leeds, London and Castleford, as well as playing for a number of rugby union clubs after switching codes in 2004.

He returned to league in 2011 with Featherstone, but a back problem means he has had to hang up his boots.

Hepworth said: “I’ve been fortunate in my rugby career to play for some great clubs and experience some great moments and I include Featherstone Rovers in that. 

“For 13 years I enjoyed a career that was virtually injury free but unfortunately I have been suffering with a disc problem in my back which has meant I have found things more difficult than I am used to. This is particularly tough as a part time player with a full time job during the day.

“Featherstone Rovers are a great club and I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the club.”

Hepworth scored seven tries in 25 appearances last season, his final game coming in the agonising 21-20 play-off defeat to Batley on September 22.

Featherstone Chief Executive Craig Poskitt said “All at Featherstone Rovers would like to wish Jonny all the best in the future. It’s always a tough a decision for a player to decide it is time to hang up his boots. Jonny has been an exemplary professional whilst at the club and has put in some fantastic performances in the Rovers shirt.
