Koukash slates RFL and promises change

Salford owner Marwan Koukash had some choice words for the RFL, and rallied his Red Devils ahead of the new season.

Speaking at the club’s 2014 launch, Koukash had the Lowry Theatre audience captivated as he openly discussed recent events and his expectations for the upcoming campaign.

The overriding message from Koukash was ‘things will change’ – both on and off the pitch.

“Nigel Wood is a good mate,” he said.

“But I have told him that I disagree with a lot of things.”

“The RFL should not bask in the glory of their recent deals.

“The latest TV deal will shape the future of the sport, yet none of the Super League chairmen understood it.

“It is the same with the new title sponsor.

“The sport needs more money, and I know there are people willing to be involved.

“If things don’t change we will lose all of our best talent to the NRL or rugby union.

“Super League clubs must be allowed to run the sport.

“Sky should speak directly with us, we have lots of ways to expand the game, which would include Championship clubs.

“Instead of, or even alongside, the Magic Weekend, how about a nines tournament?

“A new cup could work well, and offer an alternative to some of the meaningless league games.

“That being said, this season will be very exciting – especially for Salford.

“The thought of where we have come from, to the potential team we will put out in our opening game is thrilling.”

As he has regularly stated, Koukash expects a top-four finish from ‘his boys’, and head coach Brian Noble echoed this belief when he took to the stage.

“The players want to be Red Devils,” said Noble.

“They are full of desire, and are comitted to having a successful season – not just for Salford, but for the sport of rugby league.”
