Aston slams restructure

Sheffield head coach Mark Aston has made his feelings clear in the restructuring debate, and he is not a fan.

The Eagles, gunning for their third consecutive Championship title in 2014, will go about their business as normal according to Aston, who says it will be impossible for non-Super League clubs to climb the ladder.

Batley’s John Kear sees the restructure as a ‘vehicle of dreams’, but Sheffield counterpart Aston has quite opposite views.

Aston said, “The game doesn’t need instability. We should have started again, and made sure clubs are viable.

“You can’t spend what you’ve not got, and for clubs to try and reach the big time, and then compete at that level, it promises disaster.

“Instead of trying to develop the game, and bring through youth, we will have more cases of ‘boom and bust’, with clubs putting everything on the line for one season in Super League.

“We are kidding ourselves.”

Aston’s disappointment did not end there, as he also expressed his dismay at Sheffield’s exclusion from this year’s Super League academy system.

“Our academy sides may have taken some beatings off a few of the bigger Super League clubs, but at that age you learn from those kind of defeats.

“It is a shame, but we will get on with it, carry on staying under the radar and blood youth players in the first team.”

On a more positive note, Aston is excited by his two latest loan signings, Salford pair Jon Ford and Will Hope.

“Jon and Will are two young, ambitious players.

“It is good to have these type of players having an affiliation with our club, because if they become available again in the future, they know they will be welcomed at Sheffield.”
